Acupuncture is a gentle and effective Eastern medical treatment based on body energy called Qi. In a healthy person, Qi flows freely through the body; when a person experiences constitutional weakness, pathogenic invasion, fatigue, environmental stress, emotional upset, irregular diet, or an accident, Qi gets blocked or depleted. The acupuncturist helps normalize the body’s function, reduces symptoms, and optimizes the flow of Qi by inserting hair-thin needles at specific points along meridians in the body. Cupping and moxibustion are therapeutic techniques that can aid the flow of energy.

Marta Martinez Tom graduated with a Doctor of Acupuncture and Integrative Health (DAIH) from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in the Spring of 2019. At MCPHS, Marta received the President’s Commitment to Diversity Award, granted to the graduating acupuncture student who best exemplifies cultural competence in relationships with patients, families, peers, and the community.

Marta was born in Nicaragua. At age eight, she fled to Costa Rica with her family during the Civil War, seeking refuge before arriving in the United States to study at 18. A global citizen and a naturalized American citizen, Dr. Marta Martinez Tom is fluent in Spanish, English, and French and is currently learning the Chinese and German languages. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vermont College of Arts. She pursued her pre-med studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and completed her extensive massage therapy schooling at the Body Therapy Institute.

Marta’s advanced training includes studying Chinese and Japanese acupuncture styles and Chinese medicinal herbs. She completed this at the New England School of Acupuncture and was awarded her Master’s Degree in Oriental Medicine. Marta is a Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioner. Marta received the Lifelong Learning Leadership Award from the respected Oriental Medicine Doctor, Miki Shima, given to the most outstanding graduate.

Marta attended the Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine in China under the tutelage of scholars Greta Young Die and Dr. Huang Huang. She was a student of the Balanced Method taught by the former Dr. Richard Tan. While at Smith College, Dr. Marta studied with the late Peter Gregory, a scholar on Japanese culture and ancient medicinal practices, for seven years. While completing her Doctoral degree, Marta focused her doctoral work on the effect of cannabinoids on patients with chronic pain. Additionally, Dr. Marta worked with Dr. Scarlet Sorriano and Dr. Maria Broderick, both leading integrative medicine doctors, and co-led groups of patients to reduce chronic pain at Boston Medical Center.

She is a Tai Chi student of Wolf Lowenthal of the Long River Tai Chi School. Additionally, Marta has been studying with Sharon Weizenbaum of the White Pine Institute since 2000. Marta is an ongoing participant in the White Pine Healing Arts Program offered by Sharon’s Graduate Mentorship Program.

Marta is an adjunct faculty member at Smith College, having taught Health Behaviors, including theoretical frameworks on health outcomes and health policy.

Marta is a licensed acupuncturist by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine and is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). She is trained as a coach in the Co-Active Model and offers coaching sessions. Marta also lectures and consults on acupuncture, healing, and medicinal herbs. She has been a guest speaker at Boston University, Bay Path College, Smith College, Yale University, multiple hospital facilities, and other healthcare groups.

Marta founded Stay in Touch Center in 1996. The Center is predicated, in part, on observations Marta made years ago as she pursued her training and began her practice.

Integrative forms of medicine can help people avoid chronic illness, reduce the severity of their ailments, preserve their health, and maintain an overall sense of well-being.

During the summer of 2018, Martinez was invited to join the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi (Chapter 326). This exclusive membership is the oldest in the United States of America and is offered to only the top ten percent of graduate students nationwide.

After becoming a Certified Co-Active Coach, Marta embarked on a new path, adding coaching skills to her healing offerings. In 2025, Dr. Marta joined the team of the Hampshire YMCA in Northampton, MA, after becoming a Zumba Instructor. She now offers water step classes, Total Body Fitness Group exercise, Dance Fitness, and Zumba classes. Marta is considered a first responder and is certified in Adult First Aid/ CPR and AED for all ages.
